Inspiration: Let us pray. At the end of a paddling session, it is traditional to join (kakou) in a prayer (pule) of Thanksgiving that we returned safe and sound.

Inspiration: The ama(cross piece) is normally from the Ohia lehua tree and lashed painstakingly by cord. Legend has it that Pele(volcano goddess) fell in love with a handsome warrior Ohia. he had already pledged his love to Lehua. Furious, Pele turned Ohia into a twisted tree. Lehua was heartbroken. The gods turned Lehua into a flower on the Ohia tree so that the two lovers would be joined together forever

Inspiration: Top: Queen Liliuokalani, the last reigning monarch in her strength, and the reverse, Princess Kaiulani, her rose wilted in disapointment. The palaka cloth (fabric worn by laborers) throughout the middle of the painting, signifies the fact that these royaltys were the first to mingle freely with the maka'ainana, the common folk.

Inspiration: Kalakaua, young and old. Bottom depicts Kalakaua at age 19, in charge of the National Guard, head in the clouds, holding the family's totem, a lit torch at midday. The top shows Kalakaua in his dotage, The Merrie Monarch who revived the arts. He penned the drinking song, "Koni au i ka wai" under the pseudonym Figgs. Koni au ika wai - flow to me, waters I ka wai ali'i (royal waters) o ke kini la (Gin!) Olu ai, ko nohone i ka la'i (make life peaceful & calm)

Inspiration: From Ka'ahumanu, by Helen Desha Beamer in 1916 for Ahahui Ka'ahumanu, a women's benevolent society that wear the yellow feather lei. Dancers derive inspiration from I'olani Luahine.

Inspiration: (My flower and Lei; mine to cherish) From Ka Makani Ka'ili Aloha, story of a Kipahulu man whose wife left him. Chanting love songs into a calabash, he set it afloat. The wife, gathering lipoa in the ocean, spotted the calabash and realized she was deeply loved, and returned to her husband.
