Nā Mea Hawaiʻi is proud to present KULEANA a new body of work by local artist Hank Taufaasau in our Aupuni Space windows. Join us for a pau hana reception in store featuring drinks, light pūpū, conversation, and flowers by Tantalus Botanicals who will be providing a limited amount of bouquets of local flowers for purchase!

Taufaasau paints the surroundings at his home in Mānoa Valley, predominantly the local flowering and fruiting plants we all know and love.

Taufaasau says of his new series:

“Born and raised in Kalihi, we moved to our present home in 1954... in Mānoa. Over the years, my parents expanded the house and kept adding plants and flowers... Mother often bragged, ʻNothing Fancy, just Hawaiian style.’

Big, open air patio, lots of fruit… mountain apple, guava, Kona oranges, lychee, avocado, papaya, five-finger banana… plants and flowers galore! ...Older homes in the neighborhoods such as ours, common a generation ago, are doomed. When our time is up, the place will likely be torn down to be replaced by another behemoth that leaves littlespace for foliage or comfort. That, however, if for the future.”
